M.Tech in Transportation Engineering

Overview

The program aims at preparing students for positions in industry, government, and future Ph.D. students by equipping them with analytical, practical, and technical skills which will be instrumental in serving the current and future technologies, research, and innovation in Transportation Engineering. The curriculum was designed by the faculty who works closely with the transportation professionals to ensure that all necessary transportation aspects are covered in it.
The courses in the curriculum provide the knowledge and skill set in topics like intelligent transportation systems, road safety engineering, travel demand modelling, traffic operations, freight transportation, and transportation data analytics. Students also get hands-on experience in particular areas like vehicle and pedestrian simulation, highway design, transportation systems planning, etc.

About the Program

The M. Tech. in Transportation Engineering offered by the Department of Civil Engineering at Mahindra University comprises thirteen teaching course units worth 47 credits (including practical components) and a thesis worth 15 credits out of a total of 62 credits. The teaching courses will cover fundamental and advanced aspects of theoretical and practical orientation of transportation. All traditional course contents are upgraded and new courses are introduced as per industry needs. Most of the courses are embedded with the laboratory which provides the students with hands-on experience which makes them to confident while solving real-world problems. Another highlight of this course is students can choose the internship period (depending on the requirements and student interests) of 8-12 weeks/6 months/one year, which will enhance the student’s understanding of practical problems.

The uniqueness of the curriculum is the strong emphasis on Transportation Systems and their modelling along with the conventional transportation courses and laboratories (both computational and experimental), interdisciplinary elective courses, and programming and software skills required for industrial applications. The students are trained in various popular transportation software which makes them industry ready. Electives can be chosen from a wide variety of options across various departments of the University. Overall, the course content is designed to suit the industry needs of the transportation engineering profession.

Program Outcomes

  • Plan, analyze, design, and execute transportation infrastructure projects.

  • Apply the knowledge of basic science, engineering, and optimization techniques to solve transportation engineering problems.

  • Become a member of an interdisciplinary team and execute projects of multidisciplinary nature.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the transportation engineering and management principles and apply these to manage projects

Vision of the Programme

  • To nurture future engineers and equip them with state-of-the-art technologies for ensuring safe, efficient, inclusive, and sustainable transportation systems.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

  • To impart comprehensive knowledge on the elements of transportation to meet current and future challenges.
  • To prepare for working in an interdisciplinary environment with advanced technologies to solve complex transportation problems
  • To inculcate social responsibility, reflective learning, and professional ethics throughout their careers.

Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

  • Apply fundamental knowledge of transportation for planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of sustainable infrastructure
  • Utilize modern equipment and software to progress a career in academics, industry, and research in the field of transportation
  • Exhibit leadership qualities with an ethical attitude and ability to engage in lifelong learning

Course Structure

The curriculum of the proposed program has a balance of courses in Transport planning, traffic engineering, and pavement design. Students undergo mandatory ‘core’ courses in the basics of all the streams in the first and second semesters and apply the knowledge in the capstone project. Further to these, students have the option of choosing electives that would deepen their knowledge in selected streams. The curriculum is designed to make the graduates future-ready by incorporating differentiators such as Intelligent transport systems in the basic requirements. Further, the program is structured in such a way that an extended internship/ research project can be carried out in the second year.
