Brainstorming on what we understand about a problem or project and how to find solutions for it is a decent beginning when faced with a new issue.
The ability to find solutions to problems easily, the ability to justify open-ended issues, and the capacity to cope under sudden explosion of information puts an engineer under immense stress. It is a known fact that engineers and scientists would be able to cope with the sudden pressure if they could acquire advanced thinking and problem-solving techniques. In his profession, an engineer is expected to create the latest products and find solutions for issues relating to the current products. A lack of critical and analytical thinking skills is why trial and error methods are used, and brainstorming sessions are conducted to find solutions to problems when faced.
The Seven Steps of Problem Solving
1. Find out the error
Find out and describe the issue. (Short and point specifically.). Then, find the problems in the entire picture, not just your project, to acquire the solution.
2. Establish your future achievements
- Completing a specific project or error will help achieve the overall solution.
- List down the pointers that will help you know you have completed the task.
- List criteria and constraints: Criteria is the standard you want to achieve. Constraints are the curtailments or restrictions for which solutions should be provided.
3. Research and Gather Information
- Research is sometimes required to understand the problems better and gather possible solutions.
- Don’t go around the wheel – looking at better possible solutions can lead to better adaptability
- Use previous experiences.
4. Brainstorm possible solutions
Think about and list as many solutions as possible to the various issues.
5. Choose the most appropriate solution
Asses solution by: 1) Comparing the problems and the solutions and coming to a possible conclusion.
2) Adjusting to pick out the finest amongst the issues.
6. Apply the solution
- Develop plans with intricate details. Example: Drawing relating to all construction procedures if it relates to Civil Engineering.
- Chalk out plans, tasks and resources needed for the process application.
- Make and apply the plan as per the required project.
7. Test and assess the solution
- Assess the solution against the criteria and constraints.
- Describe how to curate the solutions according to the issues.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal recently made this powerful statement. However, the union minister’s calculations amid post-COVID-19 economic revamping in India sounds rakish, if not plausible.
For a developing country like ours, economic stability means the potential to pursue its development ambitions without threats or internal or external intrusion. But is India toiling to make that possible, or can it become a “$26-trillion economy” country? These critical questions need to be addressed rationally and with particular facts and figures.
The COVID-19 outburst has hit the international supply chains and led to dire financial hardships. Moreover, vulnerabilities in the entwined global economic system have disrupted the flow of goods and services and creative ideas and stupendously made the regimes wary of external dangers to financial security. All of this has doubled due to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, which continues to affect us and the global world.
There are good things too
These figures might startle you. However, it is important to know that India has also achieved remarkable success in some sectors in fulfilling its economic development goals. According to a report by Outlook, approximately 3.5-4 crore individuals are engaged in the total value chain of the textile industry. The report also says that textiles are the second largest occupation provider after agriculture all over the country. But India needs to work harder to surpass troubles in some burdensome sectors: agriculture, manufacturing, etc. Why? To reach the goals mentioned by the union minister.
How to balance it out?
To keep India’s economic growth going. Instead, to soar its graph, we need a bunch of economists who know the country and its financial situation. They should also know how to manage the economy of over 1.3 billion people who depend on diverse sectors: agriculture, manufacturing, entrepreneurship, sales, finance, public policy, banking and insurance, retail, and e-commerce, to name a few. India needs future-ready economists who are quick and resilient to take up challenges in the new-normal world. And for that, investment in the right academic space is the first and the foremost step to entering the geopolitics world.
Enter the rich world of economics and finance
Mahindra University, India’s acclaimed private university delivering academic brilliance to thousands of students across the country, offers an undergraduate programme in a Bachelor (BA) of Economics and Finance. The programme covers a comprehensive understanding of business fundamentals such as finance, accounting, operations, marketing, and OBHR strategy, which prepare students for any industry they choose.
In the course, students at Mahindra University can also specialize with a focus on the Indian Economy, corporate finance, banking, stock markets, digital marketing, e-commerce, and data analytics and visualization. Education at Mahindra University is facilitated under the guidance of highly-qualified teachers. Here, the teachers will cover the foundational basics of the subject. So, when you enter the industry, nothing is new to you. You are trained in everything.
Also, a career after BA in Economics and Finance is vast. You could explore industries like:
- Academics
- Legal firms
- Research
- Non-profits
- Corporate houses
- Business firms
- Entrepreneurship
Mahindra University also gives BA in Economics and Finance students the golden opportunity to attend a three-week international immersion programme at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. This immersion will be an excellent experience for students as it will allow them to gain valuable global exposure and master the ability to enter the real professional world. In addition, the distinctive curriculum of BA in Economics and Finance at Mahindra University is designed by top academics at the forefront of every discipline with input from industry experts.
Manifestation Vs Reality
Economics students at Mahindra University will build the right analytical skills and theoretical knowledge required to be the next generation of economists in a complicated country like ours. This will be through a distinctive mixture of microeconomics, macroeconomics, business laws, and ethics. Then, with the right economic leaders and experts, India might reach its not-so-impossible goal of becoming a $30 trillion economy. But till then, we can only manifest and watch our fellow citizens turn manifestations into reality.

Across educational institutions, there are debates on how to make education relevant for the new age. One of the challenges is how to apply the knowledge practically. The next challenge is to modify and make the authorities accept the change in the curriculum so that it is flexible to the need of the time and students’ interests. Again, the challenge is qualified professors. Further, they are forced to oblige to an inflexible curriculum directed by the Government authorities, which is overly dependent on exams. The need of the hour is to shift from such learning to project-based and practical learning.
Most educational institutions follow a set mode of teaching based on prescribed books with lessons in a different context and a monotony. As a result, the instruction has minimal scope for diversity and experimentation. The reason is the over-standardization of lessons to learn, questions to answer and marks based on rote learning rather than innovative thinking or problem-solving. With these limitations and regulations, it is hard for students to think out of the box and bring forth their creative ideas and thoughts.
There is a need to reform the educational system with a new way of teaching. This is done by BYJUs’ with the internet; ease of online learning and customizing teaching can kindle the interest in students. With the increase in reach of the internet and smartphones across the country, we can see how online learning and courses have become possible to reach a larger audience with ease.
The following are the ways to bring about a change in teaching methodology:
Focus On Memory: Traditional learning and teaching within the confines of the classroom impart theoretical knowledge. It emphasizes rote learning rather than providing emphasis on skills-based training and learning. The evaluation of the students is based on memory and not on creative or multidimensional thinking. There is a need to change the teaching methodology to focus on imparting skills.
Hybrid Form of Education: Traditional learning relies upon pedagogy based on classroom teaching within the four walls of the classrooms, where the professor explains the concepts in detail. On the other hand, Hybrid learning is an approach that combines both remote learning and in-person learning to improve the student experience and ensure learning continuity. This ensures a wider reach of students at lower cost and reduced infrastructure investment and provides a balance in learning.
Interdisciplinary Learning: It is the process of students combining multiple disciplines, e.g., natural sciences ( Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics) and Arts (Psychology, Law, for example.) This mode of learning helps in looking at a problem from multiple perspectives in a practical, real-life manner and helps thinking in generating ideas to come up with new solutions to experiment and solve problems. In higher education, there should be a massive effort to create such an environment of multidisciplinary teaching. This learning allows us to apply a subject to other subjects. The traditional model of learning has attained interdisciplinary education in many areas, but true interdisciplinary learning is revealed in the case of online teaching. As ideas can be shared with people on a larger scale, it has helped people to know and understand how to apply this concept to other subjects, thereby moving towards a new age of education.
Moving Away from Lecture-Based System: With hybrid and interdisciplinary forms of teaching gaining focus, learning has evolved not just focusing on classroom teaching to impart knowledge. E-learning provides education to many students across geography; thus, a stratum of society moves away from a restrictive teaching method. However, with the low level of higher education (14% of students are able to go beyond class XII ) and growth in population and high aspiration levels, and the diverse nature of the challenge ( in terms of language as a medium of instruction, the physical infrastructure of buildings, classrooms, lighting, admin people etc.) it is time that we make use of the digital technologies to transform the way to teach and learn and thus reform our education system. Such an Education system will reflect the need of the future generation.

As soon as you graduate, the first thing that comes to mind is applying for a job is a CV (Curriculum Vitae). However, resume preparation is an art by itself. This article shares some tips on how to craft resumes for fresh graduates.
Include a Personal Statement: Your CV should start with an introduction of yourself. A personal statement defines, in short, what is your purpose in life. This one statement of purpose carries a lot of meaning and explains your expectations and what you can contribute and thus gets noticed by the recruiter. When a recruiter scans the resume, the first thing that catches his eye is a compelling purpose statement.
Create a Professional Email id: It is time to create a new professional account; if you are using an old high school account, it sounds like coolgirl@gmail.com or crazyboy@yahoo.com. It needs to be changed to a professional-sounding one, preferably keeping it simple using your first and last name or such variables.
Customize Your Resume to the Job Description: Tweaking your resume to match the position is vital. First, read the keywords in the job description carefully and insert the terms in the resume. Keywords play a critical role in the job search as most hiring managers will type in keywords. To find the keywords, run it through a word cloud generator that will help you find the phrases.
Focus on Education: A graduate needs to focus on their educational skills. Since they don’t have experience, the skills play an essential role. Add your graduation date, coursework, majors, minors, academic achievements and awards, if any, to enhance your resume.
Keep the Formatting Simple: Keep the formatting and design simple. Use a basic but modern font like Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica. Make the readability easy on the eyes by using a font size between 11 to 13 and let there be an adequate amount of white space on the page. Of course, a different font can be used for your name, resume headers and the companies you have worked for but keeping it simple is the key. Brevity is another important factor as most recruiting managers don’t have time to look at the entire resume.
Use Active Language: The resume should be written in active language using impactful words such as achieved, earned, completed or accomplished. It attracts the reader’s attention and conveys the tasks done. If the resume is too long to read, one can shorten it using words such as thereby, making it concise.
Choose Appropriate Margins: Generally, a one-inch margin should be used on all sides with single spaces between the lines. If too much white space exists, consider making the lines spaced by 1.15 or 1.5. Margins might be slightly increased but should stay within 2 inches.
Proofread and Edit: Before sending the resume, one should proofread it several times and make sure there are no spelling and grammar errors. Further, one can use several proofreading tools to correct it better. It is also better to ask trusted friends and colleagues to review your resume. A third-party, unbiased, objective view is always the best, and you can find ways to improve your writing.
A resume is usually the first step toward getting a job. Ensuring all relevant information is included is essential and tailor-made for that particular job. Highlight the most crucial information and carefully look for errors while proofreading. A polished resume should help you receive several calls from employers.

It is a common saying, Why would others believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself? The secret to building anything in life is to make it a habit. It is said that practising anything for more than 23 days; becomes a habit. There is hardly any person who has succeeded in anything without trusting themselves.
There is an apt saying Faith can move mountains, and a powerful thinking power is what brings together successful and robust performers. Without self-belief, you won’t be able to develop mental strength and strong stamina. Self-doubt should never get in your way.
Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her. — Lao Tzu.
People with self-confidence will not have self-doubt and are confident they can make friends or talk to strangers. Even if they make mistakes, they will not self-question themselves and will rise through their mistakes.
Confident people have immense control over their emotions and feelings. Even if they are troubled, they stay calm, focus on what they are doing, and concentrate on their strengths and achievements.
Confidence and success are complementary to each other. The more success you achieve more willpower and your ability in yourself will grow. Thereby more confidence you shall possess to reach higher goals.
How do you Build confidence?
Nothing builds self-esteem and self-confidence like accomplishment. – Thomas Carlyle
- Forgiving yourself is the first step to reaching self-confidence. As humans, it is natural to make mistakes. You should not criticize yourself for it. Accept and forgive yourself.
- Be kind to yourself. Don’t be harsh on yourself.
- Don’t bully yourself or be mean to yourself. None of us like bullies, and we advice others to stand up to them. But we often forget to apply the same advice to ourselves
- Set more realistic goals and not nearing perfect; otherwise, you will always set yourself up for failure by having an unachievable goal.
- Make a list of all your successes and achievements for a week. Whether it be big or small, keep adding to your list. Then, check how you have progressed at the end of the week.
- Create a list of affirmations that help you fight your inner doubts and demons. Create a list of affirmations or positive sayings at the end of the day. Set aside a list of your positive affirmations to yourself so that you feel better.
- Make an effort with your appearance by dressing up well; looking and feeling good majorly increases your confidence.
- Keep a list of your achievements, no matter how small, that will remind you of all the positive things happening in your life.
- Give yourself a single compliment in a day. It will train your mind not always to think negatively.
- It is essential to exercise, no matter how much as it relieves stress, boosts endorphins (the happiness hormone) around your body and brain, and makes you feel better.
- Smile more; your body releases endorphins.
- Always maintain a journal expressing your gratitude.
- To express your emotions, jot down one thing you are grateful for daily. Do this for a week. It will make you understand how much gratitude you have and the positivity you radiate out.
- Eat healthily and have one or two cheat meals monthly, but that’s it.
- Remind yourself it’s okay to deny something when you don’t feel like doing something. You are not a pushover but a human with complex thoughts and feelings.
- Own your achievements. People who achieve tasks feel assured of their abilities.
- Be brave and trust yourself. Sometimes, everyone around would doubt you; the best thing to do is to fight those people and your self-doubt away through self-confidence.
- Educate yourself. Not knowing enough about a topic will make you feel unsure of yourself. Read up on the subject, so you have at least an idea of what it is about.
- Visualize an image of yourself that you are proud of, an image that is confident and calm and successful. It’s a method used by famous athletes such as Michael Phelps.
These are methods and ways to build up your confidence and feel good about yourself. Confidence, if not the key, is one of the keys to success.

What is the first question that comes to your mind when we talk about computer science? Is it, “How does computer science help the world?” Well, this may sound like an uncomplicated question. However, it holds great significance with its many salient features. This is because computer science deals with the process of solving problems, and every part of our world has some issues that need solving. From technological tools and virtual classrooms to foreseeing a terrible hailstorm, cyclone, or even the imminence of a lethal disease, we are experiencing computer science in every sphere of life. And its role of has become more critical than ever with the new-age problems: growing cases of cybercrime, data, and privacy violation across the globe.
Latest data breach case
Let us take the latest example of Razorpay, a payment mode pioneered by a group of IIT Roorkee alumni. It has recently suspended the payments link that brought donations to Alt News, a fact-checking news website, and divulged providing donors’ data to the central government.
A report by the Indian Express says, “With the growing controversy around payments unicorn Razorpay and the suspension of the payment links for donations to Alt News, the focus is now on the sanctity of payments data of individuals and companies sharing such data with authorities without user consent.”
The above example is just one of the data violation incidents that have been making news for all good reasons. Perhaps to prevent the upcoming one. How? By the gift of computer science that guides us to predict human behaviour and psyche and prevent crimes.
Current need: Skilled labour
Most computer scientists in India have a basic understanding of computational programming, statistics, or mathematics. Yeah, we live in a country of self-taught coders and digital prodigies. However, there is a long way to go for India to become one of the strongest countries to grapple with crucial issues like data breaches, cybercrime, and privacy violation. As a result, we have fewer knowledgeable minds in computer science. Perhaps, the country needs more skilled tech giants who can fend off these new-age challenges.
Your university matters

Unfortunately, today, anyone can infiltrate your identity. Not just that. Through social media tools and other modern technologies – data scraping – there is also a possibility that someone could trace your data and use it for illegal purposes clandestinely. With this unfortunate incident, you may also become victims of scams and other junk emails/texts. The growing penetration of the Internet is good in India. However, we need to keep track so that this is not misused. And for that, we need exceptional computer scientists and experts who can help the country prevent such disastrous incidents.
Why should we wait for payment mode companies like Razorpay or any other firm to suspend “suspected delinquents”? Why should we wait for things to happen?
