Anirban Ghosh has been an integral part of the USD 20 billion Mahindra Group since 1999, where he currently leads the Centre for Sustainability at Mahindra University. Serving as the Group’s Chief Sustainability Officer for a commendable seven-year tenure starting in 2015, Anirban has been a key driver of transformative initiatives for more than two decades.
During his impactful tenure, Anirban spearheaded the development of an award-winning sustainability framework. Under his leadership, the Mahindra Group achieved global milestones, becoming the first organization to commit to doubling energy efficiency, pioneering the adoption of a carbon price, and committing to Science Based Targets. Anirban has played a pivotal role in water conservation, surpassing the amount consumed by the Group, and initiated programs to transform Mahindra into a zero-waste-to-landfill, carbon-neutral, and nature-positive organization.
Anirban’s influence extends to Mahindra World City, a 1500-acre integrated township, which, under his guidance, transformed into a food waste-free city—a model now replicated across India. His collaboration with the World Bank led to the establishment of the “Sustainable Housing Leadership Coalition,” accelerating the adoption of green building practices.
Anirban’s commitment to sustainability is further evident in his contribution to a national award-winning rural development project, tripling per capita income for over 40,000 Indians. He also played a key role in establishing an EHS+ center, in partnership with the Institute for Sustainable Communities, focused on spreading sustainability throughout the supply chain.
Recognized as a “Senior Fellow” by the Indian Green Building Council, Anirban has been a sought-after speaker at international events such as COPs, the Global Climate Action Summit, The Climate Week, World Circular Economy Forum, and GRI Global. His influence extends to publications like Financial Times, Huffington Post, Green Biz, and Eco-business, where he has shared his insights. Anirban’s commitment to education is evident through sustainability sessions conducted for students at renowned institutions like INSEAD, Nalanda University, Indian School of Business, and Indian Institutes of Management. Acknowledged as a “Thought Leader,” a “Distinguished Sustainability Officer,” and a “Global C-Suite Sustainability Champion,” Anirban Ghosh continues to be a driving force in shaping a sustainable future by heading the Center for Sustainability at Mahindra University.
