K V Kurmanath
Professor of Practice
Prof. Kurmanath is a Professor of Practice at Mahindra University’s School of Digital Media and Communication. After completing B.Sc. and B.Ed., Kurmanath joined Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, to pursue B.J.M.C. and M.J.M.C. He cleared both courses with distinction, getting the first rank and bagging the Kapila Gopala Rao Memorial Gold Medal. He moved to Hyderabad to join Udayam, a Telugu daily that modernised Telugu journalism, and subsequently worked for Mahanagar, The Indian Express, The New Indian Express and The Hindu Business Line, the financial daily from The Hindu Group.
He won several awards for his Agri reporting, including the maiden award instituted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Indian Institute of Millets Research (ICAR-IIMR) and Prof. Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University.
He covered events in Information Technology, Aviation, Cybersecurity, and Agriculture in eight countries, including the US, France, the UK, and China. After 30 years in journalism, he completed his Ph.D., from PSTU, a Telangana State University, in 2024 on the Impact of Media Convergence on Newsrooms and Journalists in India. It captured how media organisations and journalists are coping with the disappearance of boundaries between the print and broadcast media.

Dr. Kurmanath’s research is at the intersection of journalism, technology and society. His primary area of study examines the impact of Media Convergence on Newsrooms and Journalists in India, specifically capturing how AI and Generative AI are disrupting newsrooms and why journalists must recalibrate their workflows to survive in the changing landscape. He has been writing extensively on developments in the AI/LLM space, Agentic AI, India’s efforts to build sovereign foundational models, hallucination, data poisoning, cybersecurity issues in LLMs, and the impact of social media on learning and mental health.
