Varda Mone

Dr. Varda Mone is a legal educator and researcher whose work sits at the intersection of law, technology, and society. She holds a Ph.D. in Law from VIT-AP University (2025) for her thesis on data protection and India’s legal and regulatory mechanisms, an LL.M. from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow, and an LL.B. from Nagpur University. Most recently an Assistant Professor at Alliance University, Bangalore, she taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Data Protection & Privacy Law, Technology & Human Rights, Legal Methods, and Statutory Interpretation, while supervising Ph.D. and postgraduate researchers.

Her research focuses on cyber law, privacy, data governance, artificial intelligence, and platform regulation, and she has published widely in Scopus- and Web of Science–indexed journals, including Economic & Political Weekly, and Brill and Cambridge University Press titles. She conceptualized the Centre for Tech-Law, Society and Digital Future at Alliance University and serves as a Senior Editor and peer reviewer for multiple international journals. Her honours include the Van Calker Fellowship (2025) at the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law, Lausanne, and Central Asian Legal Fellowship (2024) at Tashkent State University of Law.

Dr. Varda Mone’s research examines data protection and privacy through a Third World perspective lens, situating questions of digital rights within debates on decolonisation studies and the power asymmetries that shape the global order. Her doctoral work analyzed India’s legal and regulatory mechanisms for data protection, anchoring a broader agenda that spans global data governance. Her current research interest includes global AI governance, platform regulations, and internet freedom. A significant strand of her work is international and comparative, including extensive publications on the prospects of a United Nations–backed global data protection authority and on cross-border data flows, drawing on Third World and post-colonial perspectives to interrogate inequities in how digital governance is designed and who it serves. Her recent research investigates the legal implications of emerging technologies such as algorithmic profiling and facial recognition in border control, AI-driven dynamic pricing and consumer privacy, wearable health-monitoring technologies, and privacy in the post-quantum era. Her current focus lies at the intersection of privacy, data justice, and equity examining how data-driven systems reproduce inequality and how legal and regulatory design can respond and emerging questions in quantum technologies, digital grief technologies and the ethics of datafication.
